On the opening day of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, eight former LSU players were included on active rosters. These players are DJ LeMahieu (New York Yankees), Alex Bregman (Houston Astros), Aaron Nola (Philadelphia Phillies), Kevin Gausman (Toronto Blue Jays), Austin Nola (San Diego Padres), Jake Fraley (Cincinnati Reds), Alex Lange (Detroit Tigers), and Josh Smith (Rangers). LeMahieu, who played for LSU in 2008 and 2009, is a three-time MLB All-Star and has won batting titles in both the American and National Leagues.
Bregman, a two-time first-team All-American at LSU, was selected by the Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft and has helped lead them to two World Series titles. Aaron Nola, a Baton Rouge native, was selected in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Phillies and was a 2018 National League All-Star.
Gausman pitched at LSU in 2011 and 2012 and was a 2021 National League All-Star with the San Francisco Giants. Austin Nola, who played shortstop for LSU from 2009 to 2012, has been a significant contributor to the Padres’ appearances in the 2020 and 2022 MLB playoffs as their starting catcher. Fraley, who helped lead LSU to the SEC championship and a College World Series berth in 2015, begins his second season with the Cincinnati Reds. Lange made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2021 after finishing his three-year career at LSU with a 30-9 record. Smith, who played at LSU from 2017-19, was called up to the Rangers’ MLB roster in May of 2022.
